OceanGate CEO Wanted to Take Pearl Jam on Doomed Submersible

A wild story has come out of the new Netflix documentary Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster, in which the company’s late CEO had apparently expressed a desire to have Pearl Jam on board the underwater craft that imploded on an expedition to view the Titanic wreckage.

The Titan submersible infamously imploded in June 2023, killing OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush and four other passengers, making headlines worldwide.

In the Netflix doc, which was released Wednesday (June 11), Joseph Assi, a videographer named who was hired by Rush, says that the CEO was looking to put the spotlight on his fledgling company, as reported by Loudwire.

“They needed more exposure, that’s why we came along,” explains Assi. “The sub they were making was very basic, so the idea was – ‘Make us videos so we can catch the attention of people.’”

He continues, “They had wild ideas, like they want to take Pearl Jam in the submarine, or he talked about some floating city that could also submerge.”

Thankfully, Pearl Jam never made it anywhere near the Titan submersible, and Eddie Vedder and company are all alive and well. The band recently completed a spring tour, while Vedder will headline his own Ohana Festival along with Green Day and Hozier in Dana Point, California, taking place September 26th-28th.

Apparently the Oceangate guy had big Pearl Jam dreams.
