Flying Lotus is back, baby, in a very big way. The acclaimed rapper, producer, and electronic music legend has announced a new EP, BIG MAMA, set for release on March 6th.
The project marks his first release as Flying Lotus with Brainfeeder, the record label he founded nearly two decades ago. The label already houses releases from musical chameleons like Thundercat, Kamasi Washington, and Hiatus Kaiyote, so it’s only right he joins their ranks on his legendary imprint. BIG MAMA is available for preorder here.
BIG MAMA was created while Flying Lotus was isolated, creating the soundtrack to his debut feature-length film, Ash. In a press release, he hyped it up as “experimental, maximalist, hyperfast, electronic bursts of energy.”

By design, its seven tracks fit into a “continuous composition” that has no loops, which is an intriguing concept to imagine, and sounds like it’ll be a breathtaking listen to experience.
“I wanted it to be free and feel alive,” he explains in the press release. “I think that was a big intention of mine with this record, just to think about it more like sound design and make something that felt unpredictable and maximal.”
Flying Lotus’ new EP comes nearly two years after he surprise-dropped the Spirit Box EP, just in time for Halloween of that year. Infused with spiritual and mystical energy, the project served as his slightly creepy, official foray into house music.
